Health & Safety — Medications

It is extremely important that you keep the school informed of any changes to your child’s medical information or emergency contact information.

It is the responsibility of parents/guardians to administer medication for their children. Treatment regimes should, where possible, be adjusted to avoid administration of medication during school hours. When this is not possible, parents may request assistance of school personnel through the principal. Pupils should be encouraged to accept the maximum responsibility for the self-administration of medication. (Policy 662.0, Part A(2)).

If you require school personnel to assist, complete form P662-02 detailing the medication to be administered and your authorization of staff to administer it.

Additional Information

Nut Allergies

Foods containing nut products are not to be sent to school in snacks or lunches. We have several students who are very allergic to nut products, especially peanuts.

Additional Information

Student Use of the School Phone

Students can use the school phone in the case of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances with the permission of their teacher. Once permission has been received, students can call directly from the classroom.

The office will be advised by the teacher if the student will be picked up to go home (e.g., in the case of student illness).

If you pick up a student, don't forget to sign out the student in the office log book.

Avoid Dropping off Lunches at the Office

On some days there have been over a dozen lunches stacked on the front counter in the office that have been brought in for students. There is only one secretary in the Office before lunch begins. Delivering these lunches before the lunch hour is problematic and interrupts student learning.

We suggest that you engage your child in making their lunch the night before. This will help heighten their responsibility and alleviate yours.

Read CVPS procedure for dropping off lunches.

Emergency Calls to the School

We ask parents to resist phoning the school to leave messages for their child, unless it is an emergency situation. Students and parents are to make special arrangements at home before school starts.

If you have an emergency situation, please contact our office staff before 3:00 pm to convey the message. This will help the office staff manage these emergency calls and help ensure that messages get through to students.

Visitor/Parent Permission to Enter the School

In order to help ensure the safety of our students and staff, we have a required procedure to follow when entering the school building (all outside doors are locked, except the main front doors just outside the office).

All parents/guardians/visitors must check in at the office before entering the school building or port-a-pak. When your request to enter is granted, you will sign in and wear a visitor lanyard & name tag. This will confirm that you are authorized to move through the school/port-a-pak.

You must enter the school through the office. To enter the port-a-pak, the office will contact the teacher involved to arrange to open the port-a-pak main north doors.

Teachers/students will not respond to a person knocking on the port-a-pak doors.

Making Appointments to Meet with Teachers

If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher, we ask that you call in advance and make an appointment. Call the school and leave a message in the teacher’s voice mail box. They will promptly get back to you to arrange a convenient time to meet.

Winter Approaches

As the fall turns into winter, it’s important to remember and prepare for several issues:

  • Winter clothing should be prepared in advance so that students will be ready.
  • Boots and indoor shoes are also needed to keep feet dry and comfortable. All students must have indoor shoes to use in the school building.
  • When stormy days occur, it is important to understand that it is your decision to send your child to school. The schools are open on stormy days. However, the buses may not run and we may have some staff absences as a result of travel conditions.

If you choose to drop your child off at school on these days, remember that it is your responsibility to pick them up at 3:30 pm.

More information is outlined in your child’s Agenda Planner, including the radio stations to monitor on stormy days.
