2009 Cross Country Report

Congratulations to all Cornell Cross Country Runners! The Cornell cross-country team had another very successful running season in 2009 with well over 100 students in Grades 3 through 8 attending morning training sessions through the first six weeks of school. This year Cornell runners participated in four different races: the Crowle Bowl, the Area Championships, the Cornell Cup, and the York Region Championships.

The coaches were particularly proud of the participation this year as Cornell once again had one of the largest cross-country running teams around with 112 runners participating at the Area Championships.

As a school, Cornell finished first overall at the “Crowle Bowl” for the 4th consecutive year, and we came first overall in the Grade 7 and 8 Division and third overall in the Grade 4, 5, and 6 Division at the Area Championships.

Special recognition goes to the following runners who finished in the top 15 in their races at the Area Championships.

As a result of our strong performance at the “Areas” this year, we had 34 students, including six teams, qualify for the York Region Championships to race against the top runners in all of York Region. The “Regionals” are very difficult races that truly do feature the top runners in all of York Region. All of the runners who competed there should be very proud of themselves. At the Regional Championships our runners once again competed very well and our Intermediate Boys team finished first as the top team in all of York Region.

Congratulations to the runners with outstanding individual performances at the Regional Championships.

Throughout the season all of our runners have demonstrated initiative, courage, and perseverance in attending 8:15 morning practices three times a week, even through weather conditions that included cold, windy and rainy days.

This year we were again very fortunate to have a number of parents volunteering and supporting our students by driving students to races, helping coach our teams, and helping set up our school banner and a tent ‘compound’ at the Area and Regional Championships. Special thanks to Sean Torrington whose help at practices and races is always much appreciated.

The coaches would like to offer our gratitude to all those who were involved in the cross-country program in 2009. We are already looking forward to the 2010 season. Keep on running!
