My name is Kathie Higgins and I am the Chairperson of the Cornell Village Public School Advisory Council for 2007/2008.
Each month we hold meetings in the Staff Room and I encourage you to attend a meeting. Every parent and community member is welcome.
We all lead busy lives and it would be fair to say our number one concern is the wellbeing of our children. It is important for every family to have a strong partnership within our community. This partnership can be found through relationships with your child’s teacher, the principal, the vice principal, fellow students, fellow families, the school board, and local government.
Volunteerism is a great way to strengthen your ties to the community and have a positive impact. When you enter the main hallway of the school, you will see our Volunteer Tree painted on the wall.
A number of paper leaves hang on the Volunteer Tree that represent various projects for which the teachers require your help. Each leaf contains an estimate of the time required to complete the task. These tasks can range in time from ten minutes to ten weeks.
Do what you can—even the simplest task makes a difference.
The projects do not all involve activities within the school – you can complete some of them in your own home at your convenience. A great example is the grade one/two parents that have volunteered to tie skates at the weekly skating sessions. This job may take a mere ten minutes but both the children and the teachers really appreciate it.
The Council subcommittees are always looking for more parent volunteers. You do not have to be a member of Council to be on a subcommittee and you do not have to attend every meeting.
Cornell Village Public School is very fortunate to have had many dedicated individuals who have served on council since it’s inception in 2004 and have chosen to step down this year. The current council would like to thank Kathryn Ellis, Michele O’Sullivan, Deb Larsen, Shara Carr, Jennifer Guest, Sarah Kirkup-Reeves, Karen Sutch, and Laura Buckley for their many hours of dedication and hard work.
Please join us in supporting our school community by becoming a volunteer. |
