H1N1 Update

attention: this section is important

Posted: October 29, 2009

Now that we have entered the flu season, it is important for all of us to help curb the spread of illness.

Before you send your children to school, please check them for symptoms of influenza-like illness. Symptoms include:

  • Almost always: sudden onset of cough and fever
  • Common: muscle aches, sore throat, headache, decreased appetite, runny nose
  • Sometimes: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

If your child is ill, please keep your child at home until s/he feels better and is no longer exhibiting flu-like symptoms. For information on how to care for your child and what indicators of severe illness might cause you to seek medical attention, go to www.york.ca or www.fightflu.ca.

When you call your child’s school to report his/her absence, it would be helpful to indicate in your message if your child:

  • has a fever
  • is experiencing stomach and intestinal symptoms (such as vomiting or diarrhea)
  • is showing mostly breathing symptoms (such as persistent coughing, sneezing, and congestion)

This information assists us in monitoring the overall health of our school communities. The number of students who are ill is provided to York Region Community and Health Services on a daily basis in order to identify illness trends across York Region. This surveillance and monitoring system has been in place with the York Region District School Board since 2006, and is not limited to the current H1N1 influenza situation.

Please note that students who become ill at school will be isolated and will need to be picked up at school.

Please note that masks are not permitted at school. Parents who feel strongly about wanting their children to wear masks are to be asked to keep their children home.

www.cvps.ca or www.cvpsac.ca?

Well, both actually! When this site first appeared, it was primarily a school advisory council Web site, so we registered the domain www.cvpsac.ca which stood for Cornell Village Public School Advisory Council. Now that the site has expanded to a school-wide site, we thought cvps.ca (Cornell Village Public School) better reflected the site. Plus, it’s easier to remember! Both will work for the time being. But, we’ll eventually phase out the cvpsac.ca when the domain expires in 2010.

But that’s not what shows up in my browser address bar! That’s because we use URL forwarding. Find our more about URL forwarding.

Reporting Incidents of Bullying

Posted: March 27, 2009

In keeping with our Character Counts at Cornell program, we have been reviewing with our students the importance of reporting incidents of bullying to an adult that they trust. We have reminded them of the difference between tattling and reporting. Tattling is what you do to get someone into trouble; reporting is what you do to get someone out of trouble.

Here are two Web sites that you and your family may find helpful as resources: Bullying: We Can All Help Stop It from the Ministry of Education and the Kids Help Phone.
