Volunteer Tree
“When schools, families and community groups work together to support learning, children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer, and like school more. ”
—Maurice J. Elias
The Cornell Village Public School Advisory Council Volunteer Tree is located on the right wall just inside the double doors leading into the school from the entrance hall (across from the Kindergarten rooms).
In the 2006 Parent Survey, most of you indicated you would like to volunteer and help out in the school. Unfortunately, many of you had work obligations or small children at home that kept you away. We hope our Volunteer Tree helps you solve these problems and provides a way you too can help out.
Our Volunteer Tree consists of many leaves. Each leaf contains a task. Some are as small as cutting out shapes for a class project, some are as big as listening to children read, and there is every size in between.
When you have a bit of time to spare, even as little as half an hour, stop by the tree, read over the leaves, and pick one. Each leaf contains a short description of the task to be done, an estimate of the amount of time it will require, and a contact name. Check with the contact to get further instructions. Some of the tasks will require time at school, but many of them will be things you can do at home, for example cutting out shapes while you watch your favourite TV show.
So next time you are at the school, sign in at the office, stop by the Volunteer Tree, grab a leaf, and contribute to our school community.
Your help will be appreciated and I daresay you’ll get something out of it too.
Thanks to Jan Jang!
Many, many thanks to the very talented Jan Jang for volunteering her time to design and paint our Volunteer Tree. Jan personifies exactly the spirit of our tree. And not only that, its awesome design brightens our school. Thanks Jan!
