Register Your Child
To register your child, visit the school office. In order to complete the process, you will need:
- Proof of the child’s age from a document such as a birth certificate or passport,
- Proof of residency from a document such as immigration papers, proof of home purchase or rental lease, recent phone bill indicating your address,
- Immunization/health records,
- Your home and work phone numbers,
- Cell phone numbers (where applicable),
- An emergency contact number (in the event the school cannot reach you), and
- Previous report card information on your child when applicable.
It is recommended that someone who is able to speak or write English accompany you to register your child, but it is not essential. The school will assist you where necessary.
When students register for school, their grade placement is determined by their age, not by the grade they completed in their country of origin.
The York Region District School Board recognizes its primary responsibilities to provide education to the students of York Region whose biological/adoptive parent(s) are English language public school supporters. The York Region District School Board may admit students who are not resident pupils and who meet certain conditions.

Kindergarten Registration
If your child will turn 4 years old before December 31st, you may register them for Junior Kindergarten beginning the first Monday of the second school week in January. Please pick up registration forms at the school or online at www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca.
Registrations must have all information completed. This includes all information on the kindergarten registration form complete with signature, proof of child’s age (such as a birth certificate or passport), and proof of residency. York Region Health Services (YRHS) requires children to be immunized. YRHS information on the process for immunization is provided to the parents when registration forms are obtained. Until the registration package is complete a child is not considered to be registered.
We have two types of Kindergarten Programs at Cornell:
- Full Day/Alternate Day Program is our main program. Students attend on Monday, Wednesday or Tuesday, Thursday and every other Friday. It is a full day Program from 8:55 – 3:30 pm.
- Half Day/Every Day Program is our alternate program. Students attend either in the morning (8:55 – 11:30 am) or in the afternoon (1:00 – 3:30 pm) each day. The morning Program has a tendency to be more popular to parents.
When you register for JK, you can express your interest in either Program.
Caution: If you are interested in the Half Day, Every Day Program, you need be prepared to accept either morning or afternoon. If you must have only morning or only afternoon, we would advise you to request Full Day Alternate Day instead.
We will begin to organize the September classes in May. We use a range of parameters to place students in classes including: academic needs, JK/SK balance, parental requests, gender balance, and social/emotional needs. We do our very best to ensure that parents know their child’s placement before the Summer Break.
You will receive your final class placement in the mail, along with the information about our Kindergarten Orientation Evening (usually early in June).
